Why you should eat a whole food grain like oat, barley and buckwheat

You’ve got a whole grain like oats, barley or buckwheats in your pantry and a few of your favourite foods like pasta and bread.

And if you’re like me, you probably also have a couple of veggie burgers, grilled chicken or burgers, salads and stir fries.

But if you don’t have the time or the inclination to eat all that food, you can always add some whole grains like oats and barley.

What are oats?

Oats are a relatively new food group and the first one to gain popularity in the West.

There’s been a boom in oats consumption over the past few years.

They’re grown commercially in Australia, and are available in many parts of the world.

Oat bran, or oat meal, is a good source of fibre.

They are very rich in protein, iron, magnesium and zinc.

Why are oats a good grain to eat?

The oats in our diets today are mainly the dried husks of dried beans and lentils.

The beans and their hulls are eaten as a main component of bread, pasta and other foods.

Oats also make a good food source of vitamin A and B12, and can help reduce the risk of developing diabetes.

What are buckwheates? 

Buckwheats are another food group that have been a growing star in the western world for years.

Buckwheats have a very high fibre level and are known for being good for you.

They contain about 10% of the fibre in wheat.

Buckthorn is also a good cereal source of protein, vitamins and minerals. 

Are oats the best grain to consume? 

Yes, oats are a great food source.

They’ve also been studied extensively for their nutritional benefits and are recommended by health authorities for people with diabetes and heart conditions. 

Is there any difference between whole wheat and buckthorn? 

The only difference between them is the size of the husks, so whole wheat is usually smaller than buckthorns, and there is no difference in the nutrients contained in the husk.

Whole wheat is often used as a staple in the diet, and buck thorns is used as an ingredient in many processed foods.

Buck thorns has also been linked to osteoporosis, osteoprotecta, and colon cancer, and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends against eating buckthorned for people over 60 years old. 

Does oats contain all the nutrients I need? 

No, but they can be a great source of vitamins and fibre.

And as a good healthy food, they are also rich in vitamins B12 and A, iron and zinc, and magnesium. 

Will oats replace my grains? 

While oats are often used in a more nutrient dense diet, they’re not the only grain that you should be eating.

Other grains, such as quinoa, brown rice and buck rice, also contain healthy nutrients.
